ASPPA Annual: Foundation for Career Growth

Inside ASPPA

Earlier in my career, I worked on large corporate pension plans. When I transitioned to a job where I worked on small plans, I was told by my peers that I must attend the ASPPA Annual Conference since this was the premier conference for people who worked in the small plan market. I went that first year, and each year I look forward to the next one.

I attended a first-time attendee reception where I met Lynn Young. Lynn approached me and encouraged me to become involved by joining a committee. The next thing I know, I was on the Professionalism Committee. Each year at ASPPA Annual, Lynn remembered me and made a point to talk with me and catch up. While my involvement in the committee did not take up much of my time, I felt accepted into the organization. I had made a connection and I felt I belonged.

The connection with Lynn led to connections with other members and to other volunteer opportunities. Now I serve on the ASEA Leadership Council, and I am a member of the ASPPA Annual planning committee.

Other relationships I formed have helped me professionally. I can share ideas or discuss a technical issue with other members. ASEA has the Google group where I can post a question, but it is nice to be able to pick up the phone and speak to a colleague, catch up and discuss a technical question.
